How to Fit My PetSafe® SMART DOG® Collar to My Dog
Avoid leaving the collar on your pet for more than 12 hours per day to prevent skin irritation. If skin irritation does occur, stop using the collar and call your vet.
Have your dog stand comfortably. He should remain standing while fitting the collar.
Position the collar as high as possible on your dog’s neck and slightly to either side, not directly centered.
Buckle the collar so that it fits snugly. You should only be able to fit one finger between the strap and your dog’s neck. This will help ensure the contact points are touching your dog’s skin.
- If your dog has a long or thick coat, you can switch out your contact points to the long ones included in your package. You may also need to trim the hair around the contact points to ensure contact with the skin.
Recheck fit after 10 Minutes. Pets can become tense when they are nervous or unsure of what is happening. As the pet relaxes after the initial fitting period, the collar may need to be tightened just a bit more.
You may choose to trim the excess strap. Make sure to leave enough length to easily fasten the collar and to allow room for growth or a thicker winter coat. Melt the cut end of the strap with a lighter or apply a clear tacky glue to keep the cut end from fraying.
