Determining the Location
Radio-frequency interference detected from other household appliances or common electronic products will negatively affect the ability of the pet door to receive a signal from the key.
Household appliances and common electronic products should be located at least two feet (60 cm) away from the Electronic Pet Door’s location.
Typical appliances and products to consider:
- laptop computers
- wireless telephones
- microwaves
- televisions
- garage door openers
- hand-held electronic devices (such as cell phones, game stations and remote controls).
Test the Location
Before testing the location, make sure you have inserted batteries in the door and key, and set the programming on the door.
For more information, go to our articles on How to Change the Batteries in the Electronic Pet Door, How to Change the Electronic Pet Door Key Battery, and How to Set the Sensitivity on the Electronic Pet Door.
Test the Door Inside
- Set the pet door to automatic mode to test.
- Place the pet door in the upright position, in front of the door where you would like to install it.
- The door must remain vertical to operate properly. If the pet door is leaning, the flap will jam.
- Slowly move the key towards the flap until the pet door unlocks and your hand can push the flap open.
- Test one key at a time if you are using more than one. Keep all other keys out of range in a different room so it does not interfere with the signal.
Test the Door Outside
Place the pet door outside the door where you want to install it. Repeat the steps for testing to confirm this location.
If the pet door will not open when a key is presented, either inside or outside, the desired install location will not work and the pet door will need to be relocated.
Install the Pet Door
Once you have tested and confirmed the pet door is working in the desired location, you can start the installation process. For detailed information, go to our article on How to Install the Electronic Pet Door in a Door.
