How to Train My Pet to a PetSafe® Pawz Away® Barrier
Avoid leaving the collar on your pet for more than 12 hours per day to prevent skin irritation. If skin irritation does occur, stop using the collar and call your vet.
Training your pet to the system is integral to the successful use of a Pawz Away® barrier system. Training will require consistency and patience.
Place a second non-metallic collar above the barrier collar.
Attach a leash to the non-metallic collar, NOT the barrier collar.
Walk your pet toward the barrier area. As soon as you hear the tone or see that your pet is receiving a static correction, gently pull the pet away from the barrier area and back into the safe zone and reward your pet with praise and/or a treat.
- Train to this point until the pet resists the barrier area, then proceed to step 5. Some pets will begin to resist rather quickly, others may need more training sessions. Sessions should be kept to 5 minutes each session and only 2-3 times per day. Once your pet begins to resist the area, proceed to step 5.
The correction level on the collar is preset and can’t be adjusted. The longer the collar is in the correction area, the stronger the correction level will climb.
Be sure to never force or entice your pet to enter the barrier areas.
Remove the leash and allow your pet to roam free and explore their new boundaries.
- If the barrier is in an area where the pet can potentially bolt through the barrier, it is best to put a physical barrier in the area as well for training purposes. Examples would be a baby gate in a doorway or staircase. The longer the pet is in the correction area, the stronger the correction level will be. When your pet actively avoids the barrier area, the physical barrier can be removed.
