My PetSafe® Pawz Away® Outdoor Pet Barrier Has Signal Range Issues
Important Information
Ensure the barrier and collar both have enough battery power.
- Under normal conditions, the batteries will operate the barrier unit for up to one year. Replace old batteries with 4 new Alkaline D-cell batteries.
- The collar batteries last about 3 months depending on use. Replace old batteries with 2 new CR-2032 coin cell batteries.

Confirm the signal type is appropriate for your setup. Inside the battery compartment, locate the black switch with a label for “Internal” and “External”.
For Wireless setup, set the switch to “Internal”.
For Wired setup, set the switch to “External”.
Confirm the barrier is not located within 5 feet of metal in all directions. If you are using wire to create your boundary, ensure the wire is not close to large metal objects or other wires.
Verify the segment bars are set to the appropriate setting. The number of segments on the display represents the distance of the signal. If you are using a wire to create the boundary, you will need to set the range to a minimum of 3 segments.

Wireless Setup

Wired Setup
For wired setups, inspect the wire for damage. If there is insulation missing, exposing the copper wire, this can cause range issues. Cut out and remove the damaged section and splice in a new piece of wire. For detailed instructions, visit our article How to Splice Your Wire.
If your boundary wire already has several splices, it may be best to remove all the wire and lay new wire.
